San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association - 9/11 Recognition Ceremony

San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association awards the Medal of Valor to two local624 members at the 9/11 Recognition Ceremony.
The Wedgwood Senior Living apartments located at 6701 Blanco Road was built in 1965. It is an 11 story building with over 700 residents who are over the age of 55.
This senior community consisted of many residents with many health and mobility issues.
The initial alarm was dispatched to Castle Hills Fire Department just before 6:00 am and upon arrival a request for a mutual aid second and third alarm to include Balcones Heights, Shavano Park, Leon Valley, Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Bexar Bulverde departments and requested multiple ladder and platform trucks from San Antonio be dispatched. Approximately 47 units with over 150 firefighters assisted in the search and rescue of 70 non-ambulatory residents and two were rescued from the balcony. There were 18 people transported to local hospitals and a total of six fatalities.

The residents were evacuated to Churchill High School and the American Red Cross assisted in reuniting them with family and relocation after the fire.
